International Moving FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

All you need to know when moving internationally

Moving to another country is one of the most complex logistical challenges a household can face. Between customs regulations, shipping timelines, prohibited items, and coordinating delivery in a new country, there’s a lot to navigate. JK Moving has helped thousands of families relocate internationally, and these are the questions we hear most often. Whether you’re moving to Europe, Asia, South America, or beyond, this guide gives you the straightforward answers you need to plan with confidence.

What things should I avoid shipping overseas?

Several categories of items should be left behind or handled separately when moving internationally. Jewelry, cash, and irreplaceable documents should travel with you personally rather than in a shipment. Hazardous materials — including certain cleaning products, aerosols, and flammable items — are prohibited and can void your valuation coverage if included. Food is also a frequent problem: many countries enforce strict rules on importing fresh produce, meat, and dairy, and violations can result in seizure or fines at customs. Finally, rules vary significantly by destination country, so your JK international move coordinator will provide a destination-specific list of restricted items before your move.

How does JK estimate the cost of an international move?

For customers in the Washington, D.C. metro area, a JK international move consultant will visit your home in person, survey your belongings, and assess the services you’ll need. For customers in other locations, we offer virtual surveys via video call, as well as phone and email estimates. Either way, the estimate accounts for volume, destination, shipping method, packing services, and any special handling requirements.

Can I ship my automobile overseas?

Yes. You’ll need to choose between container shipping and roll-on/roll-off shipping. Container shipping provides more protection to your car by shielding it from the elements yet is more expensive.

Will I need to pay taxes and port fees?

Yes, import duties, taxes, and port fees are standard costs in international moving. The amounts vary considerably by destination country and by the type and value of goods being imported. Some countries offer duty exemptions for household goods when the owner can document permanent residency or citizenship status. Your JK international move coordinator can provide a cost estimate for your destination so there are no surprises at the port.

Should I pack my own belongings for an international move?

You can, but it’s not recommended. International shipments are subject to significantly more handling than domestic moves — including loading, ocean transit, customs inspection, and final delivery. JK’s crews are specifically trained in packing for international moves, using materials and techniques designed to protect your belongings through the full journey. Self-packed items may also receive less valuation coverage in the event of damage.

Can I store things in the U.S. or in my new country or both?

Yes — before, after, or in both the U.S. and your destination country. JK maintains more than 19.5 million cubic feet of climate-controlled storage in Virginia and Maryland, making it easy to stage your move, store overflow items, or hold belongings while your new home is being prepared. Through JK’s global supplier network, comparable storage is also available in many destination countries.

Will JK crews unload me in my new country?

Delivery in your destination country is handled by a vetted local partner through JK’s global supplier network, which is certified through FIDI/FAIM — the international moving industry’s most rigorous quality standard. Your local coordinator will be fluent in the local language and familiar with local customs regulations. The goal is continuity of service: the same standards and attention to detail you receive from JK in the U.S., delivered by a trusted partner in your new home.

Can I bring my pets when moving internationally?

Pet import requirements vary widely by country and, in some cases, by the animal’s origin country and vaccination history. Common requirements include microchipping, rabies vaccinations, health certificates issued within a specific timeframe before travel, and quarantine periods. Some countries have very strict biosecurity rules (Australia and New Zealand, for example, have lengthy quarantine requirements). Your JK international move coordinator can connect you with the right resources for your destination’s specific requirements.
