JK Moving Services offers valuation coverage options to help protect your belongings during your move or while being stored.
In addition to state-of-the-art packing materials and practices, JK looks out for your possessions in transit or storage with valuation coverage. This is a predetermined amount of liability that a mover has for your property during the move.
(Note: valuation coverage is not insurance. Moving companies are not licensed to sell insurance. Learn more here.)
The amount of valuation coverage you carry during your move is up to you. Independent insurance agencies suggest a replacement value for your personal belongings of $8-$10 per pound and no more than $50 per article, or about 70 percent of the cost of your home.
Standard coverage is provided at no extra charge. However, it uses a replacement value of just 60 cents a pound, which may not cover items like expensive electronics, so consider this option carefully.
Full replacement valuation
Full replacement valuation costs extra and covers more. In long-distance moves, coverage is based on weight at $6 per pound. For local moves in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, we calculate coverage on 1,000 pounds of goods per room, or $6,000 in coverage for every room we move.
This means that, for most items, if an article is lost, damaged, or destroyed while in our custody, we’ll repair it, replace it, or pay you for the cost of the repair or the current market value to replace it. (Download a claim form here.)
Your moving consultant will help you identify items of extraordinary value (worth more than $100 per pound) to make sure they’re covered and walk you through your options for deductibles (from $0 to $500). If you’re planning to pack and unpack your possessions yourself, your moving consulting will talk about how this affects your valuation coverage.
The chart below lists pricing for 4 levels of deductibles.
What can affect my coverage or limit JK's liability?
- Packing perishable, dangerous, or hazardous materials. Check out what you cannot pack, found here.
- Packing and unpacking your own boxes can save you money, yet it limits your mover’s liability.
- Choosing Standard coverage when your household goods are valued at more than 60 cents per pound, per article.
- Failing to notify your mover in writing about articles of extraordinary value.
- JK does not move jewelry, cash, coins, or currency and cannot take responsibility for their loss.
JK's valuation coverage is underwritten by The Travelers Insurance Company. As with any agreement, please read the terms and conditions carefully.
