Tips for a Stress-Free Move Print E-mail

Whether you are moving down the street, across the country or around the world, these quick tips will help make your next move a stress free one.

1. Get three written in-home estimates. Be wary of phone or Internet estimates. Show the mover everything that will be moved, including items in attics, basements, garages, storage areas, sheds, etc.

2.  Schedule in advance.  The first and last days of the month are the busiest for moving companies. So, be sure to schedule your move well in advance.

3. Avoid large down payments. Be wary of carriers seeking large down payments to hold dates or to reserve service.

4.  Make arrangements.  If you are currently living in an apartment building, schedule all move-out dates and arrangements in advance with your building manager. Also, plan for parking.  On narrow streets, where parking is limited, notify local police 10 days in advance in order to secure “No Parking” signs to be in place on the day you requested.

5.  Confirm.  It’s always a good idea to re-confirm your moving company’s arrival time and destination.

6.  Ask about insurance.  Play it safe, always ask about the amount of insurance coverage your moving company provides.

7.  Clean out!  Sort through and get rid of unneeded items and donate them to a local charity, or plan a garage sale.

8.  Pack properly.  Collect moving supplies that are specifically designed for transporting household products from either your moving company or a moving supply store.

9.  Plan.  Create a floor plan of your new space ahead of time to promote efficient unloading of the boxes into their designated areas.

10. Relax.  Get a good night’s sleep, relax, and be patient the day of your move.
