What things should I avoid shipping overseas?

You should avoid shipping certain things, such as jewelry or cash. You should also avoid moving anything hazardous, as it may invalidate your valuation. JK has a list of hazardous items to avoid shipping. You should not ship food as many countries have very strict regulations on bringing fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products across their borders. Also, various countries have their own customs regulations. Your international move coordinator should be able to give you a list of what you can and cannot pack based on your destination.

Will my things ship by air or sea?

It's your choice. Typically, it is more expensive to ship by air, but the cost varies based on your final destination country. You can ship by air or sea, or use a combination of both, sending items you’ll need more immediately by air. If you’re moving to Canada or Mexico, you also have the option of shipping by land. Your JK move coordinator can help you decide which method or combination is the best to use based on your timeframe.

How long does it take to ship things by air?

Typically, eight to ten days. If you will need your belongings immediately, you might want to consider shipping by air. Things that you might want to air ship include clothing, children’s items, extra linens and more.

How long does it take to ship things by sea?

Typically 6-8 weeks depending on the destination country and customs. JK can give you an idea of how long it will take based on your destination. Once your belongings arrive in customs, we can give you an exact date to expect delivery.

How will you estimate my international move?

One of JK’s international move consultants will come to your home, take a look at your belongings and your home, and find out what services you need. To learn more on how we provide accurate estimates and pricing for an international move, click here.

Can I ship my automobile overseas?

Yes. You’ll need to choose between container shipping and roll-on/roll-off shipping. Container shipping is more expensive, however it provides more protection to your car because it is shielded from the elements by the container.

Will I need to pay taxes and port fees?

Yes. Your international move coordinator can approximate the cost for you.

Can I pack myself?

Yes, however this is not advisable for overseas moves. There’s a reason why JK Moving Services has one of the lowest claims rate in the industry. If you’re moving belongings that mean a lot to you, you can always trust a JK crew.

Can I store things in the U.S. or in my new country or both?

Yes, yes, and yes. JK maintains 400,000 square feet of meticulous storage space in Virginia and Maryland. And our international suppliers provide the same high quality storage facilities in other countries as well.

Will JK crews unload me in my new country?

No. We rely on a global network of proven suppliers through FIDI/FAIM. An English coordinator member will work with you in your new country with the same high level of care and attention to detail that JK crews provide in the U.S.A.

Can I bring my pet?

Regulations on handling animals vary depending on the country. Ask your international move coordinator. Additionally, JK also has some tips for moving with pets.
